New "God" Movie Features Acharya S!

In an exciting development, the promo for a new "God" movie prominently features me as the "mythicist." This fascinating documentary--which I truly believe should be a big deal--is called "God in the Box," and you may have come across it before.

These fellows traveled around the U.S. interviewing people from all walks of life about their opinions regarding God. As you can imagine, the results run the gamut.

In this promo clip, I am sandwiched between an African-American Christian preacher and a white American female convert to Islam. (Yes, I know--the irony of it.)

And here is an amazing human-interest twist of fate: The African-American fellow at the end of the video is a friend of mine from Los Angeles! None of us had any idea of this connection, so it is very cosmic--how appropriate for the subject matter. Even better, this individual named "Ting" was very helpful to me and mine during our direst time of need.

As I say, I am very hopeful that this interesting and inspiring documentary "God in the Box" will be very popular. It has already been submitted to the Sundance Film Festival, and I am also hoping that Artivist will take notice of it, as well as mainstream media.

Wow,

That is a fascinating clip - especially of you Acharya! It makes me want to see the documentary. I've got to find out more about what you were talking about there in that timeline you had laid out to explain the history of those things.

what an amazing preview! I cannot wait to see the whole thing.

I can't wait to see the whole thing either. It seems truly fascinating and BTW, your friend at the end seems like he must be a truly beautiful person.

I do believe this is a remarkable cinematographic event.

As concerns my friend Ting, he is a human being with habits, but destiny threw us together at a most desperate time, and he shined through like a prince. I can understand why we somehow both ended up in this same groundbreaking spiritual effort.

Mriana said...

Aren't most humans creatures of habit? Even so, life has a tendency to throw people together under unusual circumstances, part and sometimes, once again, bring them back together in unusual circumstance.

Thank God society is finally having a discussion about the topic of a creator. I grew up Roman Catholic and was baptized, had first communion, and was confirmed. And I never considered leaving the church. I still go to mass as I enjoy it, however, I am an atheist. In college years ago, I started going to FCA which was detrimental as though people REALLY believe in a saviour you can talk to and speaking in tongues, blah blah blah. And the catholic church didn't make a big deal out of all that. And those people were insufferable and intolerant. I think homosexuality exists. I think transgender people exist. I'm sick of the division religion creates. We are all ONE. ONE. We are not different from each other. And the sooner we can stop judging each based on labels including "attractive", "ugly", "rich", "socialregister", "stupid", "smart"....we will be all the better for it. I'm sick of the division. It's pointless.

Yes, like you I don't believe it, but I must admit there are aspects of the Episcopal service (no, not raised or baptized), which is much like a Catholic Service, that I can really appreciate- like the music, the candles (I have rose scented prayer candles, even though I don't pray, at least not the religious do), incense, stained glass, and even the statues of Mother Mary and St. Francis (esp combined with all the other things) do something to me mentally, much like nature does. However, if you want to see me breakdown in angry ranting tears, then a Maundy Thursday service will do it, for I find it upsettingly appauling. I can't deal with such barbarism.

I find that the ritual motions (acrobatics, as some Protestants call them) does something for me mentally. (Yes, Anglican/Episcopalian is Protestant, but yet still very Catholic.) What I mean by the ritualistic motions do something for me mentally is feeling of transcendence, being one with my surroundings.

Here's the thing though, I never viewed Mother Mary as most people did- not like a pure virgin woman who had this miraculous birthing deal that is. She was special in a non-realism, mystical manner and I think on some level she still is, because I still enjoy songs like "Let It Be" and find I still appreciate the icon when I pass it.

I have to admit, with all the anger I had when I attended and all the rants various priest put up hearing and tolerating from me in their office, they never once denied a single word that I accused the Church and the theological teachings of being and doing to others. In the time since I left though, Bishop Spong, Robert Price, Fr. Harpur, Anthony Freeman, Culpitt, (all Anglicans, with the except of Price being both a Humanist/atheist who attends the Episcopal Church) and even Acharya have given me a different way of looking at these things.

I have at times considered attending again, even though I don't believe in a historical Jesus and alike, but then I remind myself of Holy Eucharist, Maundy Thursday, and alike. Thus I remember one of the many reasons, besides lack of belief, why I stopped attending over 6 years ago and decide that there is just no way I can go back with all the barbarism and cannibalism involved in the services. These are the exact things I had rants about before I left, with one priest even saying, "If you feel that strongly about it, then don't participate."

Thing is, that is most of the service and let's not forget the great [political] divide within the Anglican Church that has begun between the liberals and the conservatives. Now if they could change some of these things so that they are not so barbaric and cannibalistic and stop fighting over stupid things like women and gay rights (just leave people alone and allow them human rights), maybe I could go back to enjoy those things I appreciate. I do sadly miss the music, the ritualistic motions (ie genuflecting, bowing, and various other movement because it is almost like a dance), and the artwork. I even found something enjoyable in services without music too, because everything else was there, even the motions that were like a dance. With the right music and the right motions, I could and still do, manage to give myself feelings that are numinous and euphoric. Native American music does the very same thing to me.

I don't need no damn mushrooms. Just let me dance to music and I'll be fine. lol

Acharya:
I hope this movie will open up a discusion that will bring peace and stop fundamentalism. I have been studying history, religion and human relations for 6 years when I found your book "The Greatest Story Ever Sold" and began to make sense about religion. I reality most deist and atheist are looking or searchimg for the truth and we cannot blame anyone for that. However most religions tend to persecute those who think different. That is why fundamentalist and religious people deep insede their souls hate democracy. In reality they are totalitarians hiding in democracy!

Hi Acharya,

Very interesting video. It will be great to see your arguments along with other views that are fixated on the mental concept named 'God'.

I am not negating the existence of God, I am just saying most people's God is just a mental concept. Devoid of any direct experience of any sort. Even the ones that claim direct experiences with God - their testimony is not convincing. Not to me at least.

You say the cross existed even 5,000 years back. Very interesting.

You say, if we go far enough, we'll see the basis of these myths. Perhaps you are referring to the astrotheological foundation of the myths here? (Pardon me, but my understanding of your work is still quite shaky.)

A long time back I read somewhere that some clay tablets perhaps assyrian, 4000 years old, talk about 'the decay of civilisation, the rise of crime, the end of the world' in more or less the same manner as the bible.

Can't wait to see what you say in this video.

Looking good and making sense. As usual!
:-)

Vikram

Steveblue, STOP SPAMMING PEOPLE WITH YOUR PSEUDO CRAP! Hold your hand long enough in such positions and of course it's going to become numb- eventually. It's no different than holding your hand in the air or alike. It would be a waste of time to sit there and wait for "tingling". I'm sure people have better things to do than sit around waiting for their hands to tingle due to be in the air! *rolling eyes*

Acharya,
I do enjoy looking at the abstract thinking vidios I see you guys produce however I am left wondering if you are a Mason or maybe illuminatist. what with the information you guys throw out there. Believe me there is a God and he is everywhere all the time, You just need faith and eyes to see, have you ever wondered where that beautifull sunset came from or the beautifull snow capped Mountans. What about your child. Yes he (or she if you like)exists. In your heart, in your soul, in your eyes. and in your ears. everywhere all the time and he does love you and the poor lost souls that have been decieved by the great deceiver (lucifer).Remember what does it gain a man to lose his or her soul. Worldly possesions are fleeting but honor and grace are forever. and it is only thru our greatand powerfull god that we are gifted with these things "True rulers of the world". LOL who needs the world. (Yea I saw that) and it is well thought out but come now. Well I know you wont post this but there it is The real trueth. If trueth be known

God is an angry middle aged woman

At age 5 I remember being dropped off at "SUNday" school. We were herded into a smelly room where we pasted pictures on a collage. She yelled: who is putting paste on the collage instead of the picture! I knew it was me and I cowered in fear of GOD but kept silent. By Moonday I knew SUNday school was not for me.

God is a tyrannical Boy Scout Troop leader

I said: I don't want to go you your church service, I choose to stay here and catch fish. He said you're going... everyone is going. I do not like this GOD who wastes my time.

God is an Apoplectic Father in-law

We were driving. I said 911 was an inside job and he lost it. He said: George Bush is a man of God and he would never do that... I said how do you know that when all of the evidence says otherwise? He said I KNOW! because I HAVE FAITH! I reject this GOD who closes the minds of good men.

I have finally come to the conclusion that anyone who is religious is tip-toeing on the verge of insanity -- there are no exceptions to this statement.

At age 20 I "led" my cousin "to Christ." He turned into a religious fanatic. Next thing I know he's telling me that demons are chasing him through the house. Sheesh, what people put themselves through is amazing.

Once again, I applaud Acharya for dedicating her entire life to expanding the pool of knowledge on the mythical and astrological origins of religion.

Mriana, "Let It Be" was written about Paul McCartney's mother whose name was Mary. She died when he was young. The song recounts his attempts to recapture the fading words, images, memories of his mother and make use of them in times of emotional need. It is really a very beautiful, touching, and human song. I don't doubt McCartney was aware of and played on the religious associations of the name as well.

May I say how much I appreciate your contributions here.

I knew the Beatles (McCartney lead vocal) sung it, but I didn't know it was about his mother. Hey, Works for me! On so many different levels, but I won't go into that one.

If you're talking to me, thanks. Or you're welcome. I don't know which. lol I'm a little surprised because sometimes I wonder if my comments are worth the energy.

Acharya: hey this may be the wrong place to place this comment. But saw a video plug for Fingerprints of the Jesus Christ.

Wondering? Have you ever examined the Life of William Branham.
or F. F. Bosworth? Have you heard the miracle of Congressman Upshaw? (Healed after 59 years on crutches)
There were too many miracles in their lives, and they preached Jesus Chrsit the same today, yesterday and forever.
It's a bit late for your book for me. As there has been a life changing expierence for me. Throughout my life I have personally expierenced miracles too. So I know there is a living Christ.
Personal testimonies may not mean much individually but collectively they do.

I do request you go to "Voice of God recordings (branham.org)" site or "Believe the sign (www.believethesign.com) "site. Check it out for yourself. I'm not attempting to spam your site, but just thought you should examine something you may not have heard of.

Oh and some of the scriptures you quote that aren't used often (in your video). Where I go they are preached on.

I can see why a lot of people would say religion is bad. To me even historically it's a shame what christians have done to christians. But nevertheless there are some real McCoys. It's been that way since the beginning Cain(religious too) hated his brother Abel.
